Our Gang

June finished her stint with Hal Roach Studios by helping to introduce a new Our Gang member, Kendall "Breezy Brisbane" McComas.  Here Kendall plays an obnoxious kid who could care less about attending school and any advantages which may come from it.  He hatches a plan to get expelled by playing pranks on his teacher and on the other kids.  A by now mature looking Miss Crabtree and the kids are on the short end of these pranks, and when "Breezy" taunts a student for reciting a sappy poem, he gets his wish and is expelled.

The wrongdoer eventually sees the error of his ways and repents by the end of the two reels.  In this case "Breezy" ends up reciting that poem, much to his own chagrin.

June's popularity as "Miss Crabtree" did not end with this film.  Three years later she was asked to return as the gang's school teacher in Teacher's Beau.  It would have been interesting to see interaction between her and Spanky or Alafalfa.  As it turned out, Teacher's Beau really didn't have a whole lot of screen time with the teacher anyway, so it is just as well that June declined the offer.

Jean Marlowe??

June, Bobby Hutchins, and Pete.
And what of Miss Crabtree?

If you don't mind a bit of whimsy, I would like to think the teacher did well in life after leaving the school house.  Scott Johnson, June's biographer, recently came across a restaurant called "Crabtree's Kitchen" located in one of the northern states.  Steve Ramsey found a "Crabtree's Kitchen" on the east coast.  I recently came across a newspaper advertisement for a "Crabtree's Kitchen" in the south.  Drop in one of them someday.  Maybe our Miss Crabtree will be there, greeting her guests with her winning ways.  And all the kids get extra helpings of cake and ice cream!
