Upon June's return from Europe, Universal chose to non-renew her contract.  She soon found her way to smaller studios, where some films she made remain classics to this day, and others remain quite forgettable.  Her first film, for Hal Roach Studios, while not the best of comedies, was unique in that June was cast to play, well, herself!
Whether the story of Roach director Robert McGowan finding June while out shopping and picturing her as "Miss Crabtree" is true or not, June did make one film for Roach, and another for Mascot, before putting on the blond wig for the Our Gang short subjects.  The studio was well aware of June's presence for some time before they cast her in the "Miss Crabtree" role.  This film for example.

In this, June has reason to visit Charley's taxi company and discovers him mooning over a huge scrapbook of June Marlowe photographs.  Charley vigorously pursues June for a date and mistakenly thinks a runaway from the local asylum is June's dad.  Add to that a typical (and wet) Hal Roach ending and you have a nice and neat two reel Hal Roach comedy, but nothing special.

Of June's performance as herself, Leonard Maltin felt June was a "..surprisingly lifeless heroine.." and Variety thought June was "o.k.Film Daily wasn't any kinder with "(June Marlowe is) an attractive, demure young actress with limited acting abilities."

A Spanish (phonetic) version of this film was released in September.  It's title was "Locuras De Amor" ("The Madness Of Love") with Carmen Guerrero as the heroine.

June gets schmoozed by Charley via Ma Bell.

June would soon be returning to Roach to play her most memorable role, but first she was to reunite with an old friend, Rin-Tin-Tin.

Thanks to Chris Seguin, Cole Johnson, and Scott Johnson for their invaluable help.

On occasion, this film has been shown on the Turner Classic Movies channel (God bless 'em).
